Defying Gravity: The Inspiring Story of Zack Anglin, Quadruple Amputee Pilot

Sometimes, a story comes along that truly makes you stop and reconsider what's possible. The story of Zack Anglin is one of those. Born without hands or feet in Nigeria, adopted and raised in Wisconsin, Zack harbored a dream that many might have considered impossible: to become a pilot.
But Zack isn't one to let limitations define him. His journey to the skies is a powerful testament to the human spirit, perseverance, and the unwavering pursuit of passion.
From childhood visits to the airport with his father, the allure of flight captivated Zack. However, the path to realizing this dream was far from smooth. Multiple flight schools initially turned him away. Even after gaining acceptance to the Spartan College of Aeronautics, he faced a significant battle with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) for the green light to begin flight training. Five rejections. Imagine the resilience required to keep pushing forward after such setbacks.
Yet, push forward he did. Through persistent communication and unwavering self-belief, Zack finally convinced the FAA to grant him a special evaluation – a Statement of Demonstrated Ability (SODA). This evaluation proved his capability to fly safely, leading to his medical certification and the continuation of his flight training.
In 2019, Zack Anglin made history. He earned his license as a commercial pilot, becoming the world's first quadruple amputee to achieve this incredible feat. But his ambition didn't end there. Driven by a desire to share his passion and inspire others, Zack went on to become a flight instructor at his alma mater, Spartan College. To date, he has reportedly guided over 200 students in their own journeys to the skies.
His impact extends beyond his students. The FAA now recognizes Zack's expertise and connects aspiring pilots with disabilities to him for invaluable guidance and support. This speaks volumes about the trust and respect he has earned within the aviation community.
Earlier this year, in March 2025, Zack's extraordinary contributions were celebrated at the Aviation Week Network Laureate Awards, a well-deserved recognition of his groundbreaking achievements and inspirational journey.
Beyond aviation, Zack's story is marked by athletic prowess as well. He was a successful high school wrestler in Wisconsin, boasting an impressive record and twice qualifying for the state tournament. He also competed in track and field in college, further showcasing his determination and ability to excel in diverse fields.
Zack Anglin's life is a powerful reminder that limitations are often self-imposed. His unwavering dedication to his dream, coupled with his remarkable resilience in the face of adversity, serves as an inspiration to us all. He has not only defied gravity in the literal sense but has also shattered perceived boundaries, proving that with enough passion and perseverance, anything is truly possible.
